Hidden water reservoir in the city centre

The Aljub de la Misericòrdia is a historic water reservoir in the centre of Palma, located within the beautiful garden of the cultural centre La Misericòrdia. The term “Aljub” comes from Arabic and refers to an underground cistern used to collect rainwater – a typical feature of Moorish architecture that continued to be used after the Christian reconquest. Built in the 17th century, the Aljub supplied surrounding buildings with water for several centuries.

Architectural heritage with quiet presence

The cistern is no longer in use today, but it remains fully preserved and architecturally impressive. It consists of a barrel-vaulted underground chamber with solid masonry designed to store water for long periods. Access is via a simple stone staircase, and information panels on site explain the historical function and significance of this structure. The calm that surrounds this place is remarkable – you can truly sense the connection between daily life, technology and history from centuries past.

A small detour into peaceful Palma

The Aljub de la Misericòrdia lies right by the Rambla and is a worthwhile stop for anyone wishing to discover Palma away from the main tourist routes. The surrounding garden invites you to stroll and linger, while the adjoining cultural centre hosts rotating exhibitions. For those interested in history, architecture or tranquil spots, this hidden gem offers a rewarding experience.
